The ones on my blog and most Wordpress blogs are 500 pixels wide and I adjust the portrait ones so that they are 500 pixels high so they look balanced against the landscape ones. If you want people to be able to click to see a larger photo about 1024 pixels wide. It will be a bit of trial and error. I use a Canon PowerShot A640 at the moment. I don't think it is in their current range of cameras but my previous camera was an earlier model and I enjoyed that one just as much.
