The back garden is 40ft long there is a gap between the fence and the Oak tree but I am not sure how much. I would need to investigate!

Yes. If the Oak is close to your fence (as it appeared to be in a previous pic), error is minimised over the unusual length of your back garden.

I loved your pics We have had a very light sprinkling this evening. I have been behaving rather oddly to try and get some pics of my back garden and the oak tree (in the dark) from my upstairs window before the snow melts.

Doesn’t the distance from the tree to the measuring point have any bearing on the result?

It would be interesting to determine the age of that fine Oak and only the trunk diameter at shoulder height is required.

This can be determined without the trespass you were worried about, utilising the advantageous depth to your back garden.

From the house, sight two upright 6″ nails tapped into the top of your fence panel. Adjust the nails until they are in line with the trunk when you are furthest away. This will almost suffice as a direct caliper measurement.

Now measure the distance between the two nails in inches and multiply by 22/7. The result is the Oak’s age in years.

I love that tree, I do so want to capture it with the snow on again. But the snow keeps doing sneaky night time falling and melting by morning!
