I’ve come across the variety as well (human, as opposed to symbolised by apples!). Enquiring sweetly what they suppose the alternative to growing old would be usually works. Or, as my ex-husband (very blunt, very large & very short-tempered) once exasperatedly asked of just such a colleague: “you do want to go on living, don’t you?”:-).

Yes two apples

The slightly jaded one in the foreground (the subject of the comments) and the one in the background (the commenter) not quite in focus (not sure what state that one is in).

It is difficult to tell which would be most tempting…
