I read a book recently about her. Bess of Hardwick was an amazing woman who, despite her links to people who fell in and out of favour with the Queen, managed not only to keep her life but outlived Elizabeth. One of Bess' husbands, the Earl of Shrewsbury, was "keeper" of Mary, Queen of Scots... and was most probably driven mad by Elizabeth's (the queen) refusal to properly reimburse him for his expenses or relieve him of this onerous duty.
