Thank you :-)

I would much rather be cable connected, BT were being difficult!!

After the tweaking the wireless connections they seem as fast as the cable connection (for now).

My laptop has always been a problem (to struggle with), but that is another story.

Any oddity may be caused by a mismatch between protocols. Example, a type 'n' WiFi is supposed to be backwards compatible with a type 'b' and/or 'g' card but, depending on the implementation, throughput may not be as good as it could be.

The main thing is that it works without problems - just remember WiFi will never be as good or fast as cable.

An update on progress - After a bit of trial and error, the connections now seem to be stable and fast. Only my laptop to sort out now, I think the network card leaves a lot to be desired...

Thanks for that :-) I have a new router installed which works intermittently.... I am beginning to suspect it is a BT problem even though they said the line was working fine when I checked with them.

The chimney does look rather odd. I shall have to try and find out why it is like that.

Friends had one of those and we could never get the WiFi to work correctly on it - ended up getting them a D-Link and they have never looked back. I have also installed Linksys routers for several people (one of the computer stores was selling off older models at 60% off) that again just work.

Anyway I hope all goes well with your new router, whichever brand you get.
