This is the first time I have captured the detail in that way. I was testing out my new lens to see what it would do. I haven't been disappointed with any of the photos I have taken with it. Basically it really boils down to, having the equipment that is able to take the photo and knowing how to get the best out of the equipment and that might just mean leaving it on auto (I took this photo on basic landscape setting) and having a good eye for a photo. So in a nutshell no technical knowledge was needed to get the shot, my equipment was equal to the task of getting the detailing, the framing of the photo was down to me and my view that night :-) I think it is to do with the camera itself (how good the sensor is) and the lens.

I've tried before and all I end up with is grey blur with no features. I talked to a guy at work about it (really into his cameras) and he said it was because cameras "liked" grey as a neutral colour, and then proceeded to talk about a whole load of camera stuff that I didn't really understand...
