Yes, the Cathedral Tower is not generally open to the public and only every few years on these special Heritage Open Doors weekends. The Castle Keep views however are well worth the inexpensive entrance fees.

On my next visit I plan to explore the Castle Keep. You have confirmed in my mind that the Cathedral Tower is not one for me to explore...

I seem to remember a sloping roof both ways that was difficult to negotiate in the centre. The view south is better from The Castle Keep as it is a somewhat restricted view in that direction particularly with the high buildings across the street, The view north towards the city centre provided an unusual vantage point of tall buildings seen from a different angle. Once again however, the gradual rising contour of the city from this point wasn't as good a viewpoint as what you would expect with the immediate surrounding streets being more prominent.

Was there a good view from the top of the tower?

I am not very good with heights... So I normally rely on others to give me their point of view from the heights! Even though I know I am missing out...

Lovely shots and I like the idea that you captured the sky in two different ways, great to get a blue sky like that. I once had the very rare opportunity to climb up the tower on "Heritage Open Doors" weekend. Not ideal for the average tour party as there were a lot of low beams to watch out for.
