I agree, Friends is still one of my favorite shows and everything Maggie Smith says makes me laugh on DA. I hope I didn't offend any DA fans, it was just a perception of British life vs. reality curiousity.

Then again, Bess of Hardwick's life did have quite a few plot twists and turns in it, didn't it?

(D'ja like that? I went off on an unrelated point and then brought it back to the point -let's pretend it was an intentional diversion and a full-circle conversation rather than my tangential thinking today;)

I must admit I like the personal bits too, it makes sense of how someone accomplished what they did.

I have to confess I haven't watched a single episode of Downton Abbey so I have no ideas whether it is good, bad or indifferent LOL. I have watched some episodes of 'Friends' and the better ones had me in stitches :-)

It looks like a beautiful house. Even if cold inside it must be full of light.

Well, I don't want to impose at Vision and Verb, so I'll write my thoughts here. I love learning little personal tidbits about the personal lives of people such as Bess, rather than just their accomplishments. I think we need that, as a culture, for continuity - to learn from both their strengths and their weaknesses.

I noticed a commenter at V&V mentioned Downton Abbey. Now please, no one throw rotten tomatoes at me, but other than the costumes, the set, the acting itself and Maggie Smith, I'm...not a fan?

Now I love our U.S. show "Friends", but I'm wondering if Downton Abbey has the same effect that "Friends" did on the rest of the world (and before that, Beverly Hills 90210) as far as global perception - people end up thinking that's what life was/is like, not realizing that there's a certain amount of ridiculousness/absurdity to the plot ;)
