King’s College was founded in 1441 by Henry VI, who had founded Eton College (qv) in 1440 and subsequently linked the school to King’s in order to supply college scholars. King’s College chapel was begun in 1446. Following Henry’s deposition in 1461, the college’s income was much reduced, and the only building of his great scheme to be built was the chapel, which took about a century to complete. The initial court, Old Court, was built north of the chapel (this area, since 1829, part of the Old Schools precinct owned by the University), with the intention that it should be superseded by the great scheme, of which the chapel would have been the north side of the resultant court. Building was slow and piecemeal throughout the following centuries, Front Court not being finished until the early C19. The site remains (1998) in college use.

Your usual standard brings it to us crisply.
I am enjoying the results of my replacement camera
Fabulous photos, Cherie. Many angles and perspectives I have never seen before.
Thank you I am glad you enjoyed the photos
Classic buildings. One of the delights of Christ,as for me is the Carol Service from King’s College.
I would love to attend the Carol Service there
I think King Henry VI was very smart in establishing Eton College first, in 1440, then soon after opening King’s College at Cambridge. Only by educating an entire generation of bright young men could he have hoped to create quality professionals, writers, ambassadors etc.
There have certainly been a number of great minds that have graduated out of Cambridge.
Great photos stirring up many memories, old and new. I will be back again soon. Thanks for sharing so many Cambridge views.
Not only old and new but also good and bad… these two opposites do tend to travel together.
The two opposites do tend to travel together, that is life.
We only had a brief time in Cambridge and some things on my list were missed. Perhaps I will get time to go back and capture them some day
