Stepping Out

An Afternoon Stroll

In May last year I committed to a walking challenge of 10000 steps per day for 50 days:

I know there are some days, that I will not be able to achieve that step count in a day. When I am travelling long distances in a car to meet up with family or go to a holiday destination, that step count will be challenging and unlikely to happen.

My own personal goal is to achieve on average over 10000 steps per day over the 50 day challenge which started 14 May 2018.

I successfully completed my goal:

There were only two days when I couldn’t achieve this. I had factored those days in and had steps in the bank to cover the shortfall. The two days were when I was travelling down south for a family gathering before we embarked on our travels in Chichester for a week.

I recently came across the Country Walking magazine 2019 challenge of walking 1000 miles in a year. I was ready for a new challenge to focus on. To achieve 1000 miles in 365 days I will have to walk approximately 7300 steps each day. If I really put my mind to it and walk 10000 steps each day I will reach the 1000 mile goal by the end of 2019.

My commitment is to try and achieve the 1000 in 365 days starting on 1st March 2019.

The first photograph was taken on one of my first walks of last years walking challenge. The second photo is taken in the same place a few days before I embark on my new challenge.

Good for you! That’s about 3 miles per day. Not easy to keep up.

    • CherryPie says:

Yes, just under 3 miles per day. I know it is difficult to keep up… After the walking challenge I undertook last year I put my feet up and got sedentary again…

What I really need is inspiration for local places to walk alone or to find some local walkers or groups to walk with. Opportunities to up my mileage :-)

I know in your first sentence, Cherry, you mean 10,000 steps, right? (Instead of “In May last year I committed to a walking challenge of 1000 steps per day for 50 days.”) I really like the 1000 miles/year and wonder if I would make it. But I’d need to get a pedometer…and WALK more! BRAVA to you.

    • CherryPie says:

Yes… my eyes seem to have been boggled by all the 0000s in my post. I have corrected my typo now, thank you :-)

Pedometers are fun and they do encourage you to walk more. They can become addictive ;-)

I think you are doing great and I know it is fun to have a challenge….and of course you notice the difference in you body, mind and soul :)

    • CherryPie says:

I fell by the wayside a bit after my last challenge ;-)

I like this challenge better than my previous one. It encourages me to do more and the goal steps/mileage is an average throughout the year. That is good for my mind, body and soul.

My previous challenge was a specific step count each day which on days that I didn’t want to walk so far left me feeling a bit out of sorts!

Nevertheless I will again sign up to that challenge in May to challenge myself again ;-)

  4. Well done – not always easy to walk so many steps every day so you have done so well. Good Luck with your next challenge.

    • CherryPie says:

The steps in a day challenge was difficult. The new challenge is less difficult because the steps are an average throughout the year :-)

  5. The Yum List says:

Congrats! It feels good to keep a promise to yourself.

  6. Andrew Scott says:

Your perseverance is admirable. I pass the time while walking 3 or 4 miles by playing golf, even though many regard golf as “a good walk spoiled”. But I certainly can’t do that each day. I suppose if I could find a pub 2 miles away from me… :)

    • CherryPie says:

The specific step count a day was challenging. The 1000 mile goal over 12 months is a lot less challenging. But really the whole point is being a bit more active and less sedentary. Golf most definitely counts as being active :-)

  7. You need to reward yourself a nice piece of cake after each walk to encourage you to walk more and often!

    • CherryPie says:

I was on a mission, cake was included at selected intervals. At the outset of my mission I was laid low with the lurgy and my walking suffered…
