We visited Castleton for a weekend just after the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001. Due to a selfish farmer who would not move his cattle out of a field in the area the castle was off limits. It was supposed to be a walking weekend but most walks were off limits too so we had to improvise. Mr C has never really got back into walking since then... Wenlock Abbey and the town are well worth a visit :-)

Wenlock Abbey is an atmospheric place. There are several abbeys in Shropshire another I would recommend for atmosphere is Buildwas which is Small and peaceful.
