Berkhamsted Castle was first built as a motte-and-bailey castle in the late 11th century. Kept in royal hands, it was occupied by key figures of the Middle Ages, such as Thomas Becket, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, and the Black Prince. Much of its stone was plundered during the 16th century.
The lodge situated at the site of the castle dates from 1865.
Gosh that is a good motte and bailey. Good to see some of the stones and walls remain.
That part of the castle is spectacular.
Oh I have been there at least 3 times
Walked along the canal a bit.
Visited the town centre itself.
Bletchley Park is not far away from there.
Did you see it too?
This was my first visit. We did go into the town and the church.
We didn’t do Bletchley although it is on our list of ‘things to do’.
pity about the plunder! the lodge has fared well it appears, CP.
It is so very close to the railway station too.
These ancient castle always look good as ruins, but there does not appear to be much left here after being plundered for its stone
There isn’t a lot left to see. Apparently it looks more impressive from a train running on the nearby railway track.
nice presentation Cherie… the ruins have been well taken care of….peter:)
The remains are very well cared for.
