Mostly bachelors (divorced) so they are not in the frame of mind for bringing food dishes to compliment a meal or even drinks! We often invite them for a meal but the sharing experience you mention is not there. On these occasions we are the caterers. Invite eg 3 other couples and ask each couple to bring one course eg an hors d'oeuvres platter, salad and vegetables, and a cake and fruit bowl.
