			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: justify;">Belsay Castle has a completely different look a feel about it than the <a href="http://www.cheriesplace.me.uk/blog/index.php/2011/06/28/belsay-hall-castle-and-gardens/" target="_blank">hall that was built</a> to replace it.  On Christmas Day in 1817, Charles Monck and his family moved from Belsay Castle into the new hall.  Following their departure the Castle gradually fell into disrepair. The 14th-century tower still dominates the castle.</p>
<blockquote style="text-align: justify;"><p>This is one of the best-surviving examples of a peel tower &#8211; a regional type of fortification built by rich families in the late Middle Ages to defend themselves during violent times on the Anglo-Scottish border. *</p></blockquote>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The Middleton coat-of-arms are displayed above the porch along with the inscription: THOMAS MIDDLETON AND DORATHY HIS WIFE BVILDED THIS HOUSE ANNO 1614.</p>
