Malmesbury – Day Four

After breakfast we checked out of the hotel where we payed the release fee so that the room bear could come home with us. He was named after the room we stayed in (Henry Hanks). We then made our way to the market town, Stow-on-the-Wold where we had a quiet hour mooching around the shops.

When we had finished we continued on our journey, stopping at Hanbury Hall for lunch and the gardens. The lunch was delicious and the gardens were challenging. The recent heavy rain falls had made some of the routes impossible and some creative thinking to navigate our way around the garden.

Garden Pavillion

Currently Hanbury Hall has two pairs of garden pavilions. These have been reconstructed with timber rather than masonry so that they don’t detract from the stonework on the hall.

The Sunken Parterre

This sunken parterre is part of the formal gardens at Hanbury Hall. Archaeological investigation during the winter months of 1992-1993 uncovered remains of the formal garden. The main outline of the garden has now been re-instated, with the Sunken Parterre being the first part to be restored. The garden is being planted with historical accuracy using early eighteenth century publications.

The garden was originally surrounded by tall brick walls but due to the cost of reconstructing them they have been substituted a yew hedge. It was also thought that new brick would out of place next to the softly faded brickwork of the house.

PhotoHunt – Ripples

This family of moorhens really didn’t want to be photographed. I had to follow them all round the pool, they kept escaping to the opposite side from where I was. There were in fact a few more chicks in the family but they were well hidden in the reeds at the edge of the pond.

One little chick was just a little bit too slow for a determined photographer. You can see the ripples he made on the lilly pad whilst trying to catch up with the others.

Final Destination

The last port of call on my weekend away was Hanbury Hall for lunch and gardens. The lunch was delicious and the grounds were nice to walk around despite the recent heavy rain making some of the routes impossible. It was quite a struggle to think of how to get to the pond.
