We booked a last-minute overnighter so that we could spend a whole day at Chatsworth. Before setting off on our journey we visited mum who seemed in a better place than she had been in recent days.

As we left it was time for lunch (both mum’s and ours) so we stopped at Boscobel House for a sandwich before continuing our journey to our first port of call, Bolsover Castle.

For a long time, we had been intending to visit Bolsover and we weren’t disappointed. The property has a rich and interesting history. The first structure of the current castle dates back to 1612 to 1617 and was built by Sir Charles Cavendish. The castle was built on the earthworks and ruins of a 12th century medieval castle built by the Peverel Family.

As we entered what is referred to as ‘The Little’ castle the heavens opened leaving us grateful that the property has a roof. The artworks painted on the walls and ceilings within are stunning. Each room has its own theme; The seasons, heaven and earth and other similar themes. We had hoped to enjoy the wall walk but when we had finished our tour of ‘The Little’ castle the rain had become even more torrential. The wall walk is Something, along with the gardens and fountain that we will have to pick up on a sunnier day.

Despite having an umbrella I got absolutely soaked walking back to the visitor centre. The rain was coming in sideways and the paths were rivers of water. My feet got soaked and one arm of my fleece was rather soggy.

Thankfully our hotel, the Premier Inn, wasn’t far away. I was soon able to shed my soggy garments and have a lovely soak in the bath and feel clean and refreshed.

Later we dined in The Divan Restaurant which serves delicious Turkish cuisine. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming and vibrant. Over the meal we realised it was a family team; mother, father and daughter. The daughter was serving us, the father was the cook and the mother checking up to see if everything was as it should be and that we were happy.

We retired to the nearby Wetherspoons Spa Lane Vaults for a nightcap. The wine I ordered, a Pinot Grigio Blush, arrived looking rather dark. Mr C queried what had been delivered and was told it was correct. One sweet saccharine sip later my taste buds were assaulted. The wine was returned, Mr C opting for a safe dry white wine rather than trying to educate the staff to serve the dry rose that Weatherspoon’s does offer.

Walking back to the hotel we enjoyed the view of St Mary’s twisted spire surrounded by mist.

Anne Hathaway’s Cottage was originally a farmhouse. It was built in 1463 and comprised only three rooms, two of which survive – the kitchen and the parlour. The first Hathaway to live in the cottage was Anne’s grandfather John Hathaway, who was a tenant sheep farmer. Anne, later Shakespeare’s wife, was born in the cottage in 1556.

When the site was a farm it was known as ‘Hewlands’ and the Hathaway family were successful sheep farmers. The garden was a farmyard with some livestock and space for growing herbs and vegetables.

Anne’s father died in 1581 and Anne’s brother Bartholomew inherited the tenancy of the 90-acre farm and he later bought the freehold. He then added an extension, increasing the size of the cottage and inserted new chimneys and an upper floor at the same time. This work was completed before Bartholomew’s death in 1624.

By the late 19th century, the family’s fortunes had declined. Some property including land and other houses were mortgaged, and eventually sold. In 1838 the cottage itself was sold, but the Hathaway family continued to live in the cottage as tenants.

One of the last Hathaways to live in the cottage was Mary Baker. When the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust purchased the cottage in 1892, Mary and her family were paid the large wage of £75 per year. Their duties were to share family stories and to care for the cottage, both of which we continue to do today. Her son William Baker occupied part of the cottage until he left in 1911.

For breakfast I chose the vegetarian option that had tempted me the day before. It was delicious.

As we checked out of the hotel we were asked if we had enjoyed our stay and our choice of room style, and, if we returned would we choose the same or something different? There are three options; the Tudor Rooms (with original oak beams), the Georgian Townhouse (with high ceilings and chandeliers) or the contemporary rooms (with a lift). The hotel had phoned up before our stay to ask which type we would like and we chose the Georgian option.

These personal touches and attention to detail made us feel much more welcome than in our previous hotel in Stratford where the personal touch and care of the customer wasn’t quite where it should be.

As we travelled to Compton Verney, the place we had chosen to visit on our way home, persistent rain set in. When we arrived at the gates, I suggested that perhaps we should choose a more indoor destination. Compton Verney has art galleries but the grounds hold more interest for me and it would not have been much fun in the rain.

I suggested the nearby British Motor Museum which I knew Mr C would enjoy. He jumped at the suggestion and we arrived just after it had opened for the day. It was warm and dry inside the museum and some of the exhibitions had changed a lot since our previous visit. This included a Jaguar exhibition wing which was fascinating. There is so much to see that it isn’t possible to take everything in on one visit.

Whilst there, we chose to have lunch in the café which has some tasty food options.

All too soon it was time to return home. We stopped off to pick up a ready meal of venison casserole, roast potatoes and carrots for our fine dining later that evening.

I couldn’t miss out on the opportunity even though the vegetarian breakfast was also tempting. I wasn’t disappointed.

After breakfast, as planned, we had a chilly but leisurely mooch around the town before having lunch in Huffkins. I chose a Belgian bun, which was tasty, but I had forgotten how sticky the icing on top is! Surprisingly one of the Waitresses recognised us from our previous visits.

Our planned adventure for the afternoon was the Butterfly Farm which was busier than on our previous visits. I felt a bit crowded out when we first arrived which wasn’t helped by a gentleman who followed me round as I was trying to take photographs; he too was looking for perfect photo opportunities. I think it might have been the half term holiday which starts a week earlier in Stratford than in my local schools.

There were lots of interesting creatures hiding in plain view in the tropical house, including a red kneed tarantula who unusually was at the front of his safe cave and slowly moving his fangs. The cayman, once again did not realise that I had come to visit and was hiding away in his sleeping quarters.

We returned to Brook Tavener where Mr C had purchased a jacket the previous day. He bought the same jacket in a different colour. It was now time to return to the hotel for a warming cup of tea and a chill out before pre-theatre dining in the Giggling Squid. I chose sticky chicken which was delicious and chose the appropriately named (for Valentine’s Day) Melting Heart Chocolate. Unfortunately, when it arrived it was the full-sized version rather than the small portion ordered, reminding me that the service had been a little bit quirky on our previous visit there. We had a date with Hamlet at the RSC so there wasn’t time to rectify the mistake.

Photo copywrite of the RSC (Hamlet promotional material)

The stage was stunning in the shape of a ship with water around the bows and a video of waves and horizon to the stern. The first half is scene setting where the story is told. The second half, which is more dramatic, saw the stage tilt back and forth with the stormy sea and dramatic culmination of the story.

We returned to the hotel to have a nightcap in the bar to find that our favourite seats had just been taken, as were all the other seats in the bar area. We retired to another seating area which is lovely, albeit quieter than the bar area.

We were joined by others including two gay couples (including an American and a German) who discussed the recent election of Trump and related politics of the situation. Their discussion was to loud to tune out, but at least it was interesting.

We had a leisurely start to the day, choosing lunch in one of the cafés listed in the ‘Extra Mile’ book that seeks out foody delights as alternatives to motorway services.

We settled on Ellenden Farm Shop Café near Harvington. When we arrived, I realised that we had been there before on a day trip to Evesham. I chose a humble toasted teacake with marmalade, it was delicious.

Before checking into our hotel, we visited Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. It is quaint with interesting history and due to the weather very cold inside.

After our visit we were able to book into our Stratford hotel, The Indigo. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our room in the Georgian part of the hotel. The room was delightful with plenty of lighting options.

Rather than unpack our bags we decided to head into town, visiting a second-hand bookshop and Waterstones. In Waterstones I saw a book on Malta cuisine. I had been tempted to buy it when I first saw it after our holiday in Malta just over a year ago. I resisted buying the book at the time just in case I was having rose tinted spectacles after our recent visit. I realised I still loved the recipes in the book but unfortunately the book was damaged so once again I chose to leave it on the shelf.

Back in the hotel I had a glass of wine in the hotel bar before returning to our room for a cup of tea and a lovely relaxing shower.

We dined in Loxley’s, a pre valentines day dinner due to our Valentine’s Day ‘date night’ being in the theatre to see Hamlet. I chose chicken with pureed carrot, potato dauphinoise and fricassee of mushrooms. It was beautifully presented but unfortunately, I forgot to take a quick photo!

We had a nightcap in the hotel bar, the Woodsman where we sat in our favourite seats as we had done earlier in the afternoon.
