Above your head is the central boss with the lamb and flag. It is fixed at the bottom of the king post which rises to the apex of the roof. Now look for this boss and the king post in the model.

The king post is constructed from three huge oak trees spliced together. Its weight is held by the whole structure, primarily supported on four horizontal beams crossing in the centre (where the human figure is standing in the model). Eight queen posts and eight pendant posts terminate at the base with the ring of sixteen bosses visible above your head. Almost every timbre is numbered, which indicates that the roof was pre-made at ground level, then dismantled and reassembled in situ. *

This is a window from All Saints Church that can be found within the grounds of Sudbury Hall. A plaque in front of the window gives the following information:

When war was declared in 1939, Manchester like many other cities moved fast to protect its young; living in and near to the city centre. Children were uprooted from the security of their homes, marched in columns to the railway stations and re-housed in selected locations within the countryside. One such location was Sudbury, Derbyshire, which catered for the children of St Thomas’ School, Ardwick, Manchester.

Now some 60 years later, this historic event has finally been recorded for all time by the instillation of a specially designed stained glass window; handmade by Michael Stokes. The window was commissioned by a small group of evacuees and presented to the community in the first year of the Millennium as an expression or their gratitude and thanks for the protection and affection, the experienced during the war years.

The Bishop of Derby dedicated the window at a special service on 3rd June 2001.

The striking Jeruzalemkerk was built between 1428 and 1465 and is a curious combination of Byzantine and Gothic styles. It was built by the Adornes family, originally merchants from Genoa, who had travelled on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and were so impressed by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre that they built a copy of it in Bruges. There is even a copy of Christ’s memorial tomb in the crypt. Spared pillage or destruction throughout the centuries thanks to its private chapel status – the church is still owned by the family’s descendants – it is remarkably well preserved.

The alter is carved in a rather macabre fashion, with skulls and bones, and the cave-like atmosphere of the church is emphasised by the space behind the altar and above the crypt, which rises almost to the full height of the tower to create a rather eerie cavern.

Atop the tower outside sit the Jerusalem cross, and the wheel and palm leaf of St Catherine, to commemorate the journey of Anselm and his son to Jerusalem and Mt Sinai in 1470. *
