It was Mr C’s special day so we did a little bit of what he fancied which meant that after breakfast we started the day with ‘The Long Walk’. The weather was warm but the sun had not yet broken through the clouds, a perfect time of day for walking. As we set off on the walk it was odd to hear the roar of jet planes as they approached the runway at Heathrow and not be able to see them until they emerged from the clouds. The deer in Windsor Great Park were shy and elusive, unlike our previous visit when they crossed the pathway near to me. As we walked back someone noticed the herd in the distance.

Back in town after our walk of almost five miles, Mr C had hoped to have lunch in The Pancake House but there was a 40 minute wait for food. Mr C chose not to wait so we went in search of another suitable eatery nearby. We settled on Heidi’s Bakery which had lots of tempting treats on offer. Mr C chose a quiche, this option also caught my eye but the call of a blueberry and frangipane tart was too much for me to resist. It was delicious! Whilst eating we heard loud roaring and then were visited by a dinosaur that had a few kids in tow.

Next we visited the Brooke Taverner store, one of Mr C’s favourite places for clothes, especially shirts. He came away with a few purchases. We browsed around Waterstones where I purchased a facsimile copy of a book on English Cathedrals that was written in 1934. The book is charming and delightful with its insight into history.

On our way back to the hotel we stopped off at Wetherspoon’s where I enjoyed chilling out on the terrace with a glass of rose wine.

Later we had an aperitif in the hotel bar before dining in A La Russe which was every bit as good it was on our previous visits. After dining, we returned to the George Inn for one last nightcap before retiring to our room for the night.

After completing my Queen Elizabeth II memorial walking challenge; 96k (60 miles) by virtually walking from Sonning Common to London, I retraced my steps on the virtual route from London back to Windsor (just under 29 miles). I concluded my challenge with a ‘real’ walk along the 2.64 miles ‘Long Walk’ from the Windsor Castle Cambridge gate entrance to the Copper Horse statue of King George III.

We enjoyed the views and seeing the deer herd as we got closer to the large statue of King George III that is at the far end of the walk. I enjoyed the sense of achievement and reflected on Queen Elizabeth II as I took in the view from the elevated location before walking the pathway back to Windsor.

My medal didn’t arrive in time for it to be presented at the end of The LongWalk . When it arrived I had it presented in one of my favourite local places, Hodnet Hall Gardens which also has lovely tree lined walks.

All the proceeds of medal purchases were equally donated between selected Queen’s Animal Charities. I have made additional donations to two of them; RSPB and the Dogs Trust. I have also made a donation to The Queens Green Canopy which was an initiative to plant trees to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The initiative has now been extended so that trees can be planted in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

For breakfast I chose the continental option. It was every bit as good as I remembered it from last time. Comfortably replete, we walked through Windsor to the Cambridge Gates (The Windsor Great Park entrance to the castle).

The weather was perfect for the the walk; it was so warm we didn’t need to wear coats. The walk is 2.64 miles long and we enjoyed the views and seeing the deer herd as we got closer to the large statue of King George III that is located at the far end of the walk. We enjoyed the sense of achievement and took in the view from the elevated location before walking the pathway in the opposite direction in time for lunch in Clarence Brasserie & tea room where I chose fishcake with a sweet chilli sauce.

After lunch I sat on a bench whilst Mr C went to look for a Moroccan restaurant we had booked for the Monday night. He was gone so long I began to wonder if he had got lost or forgotten about me. Whilst I was waiting two ladies decided to sit next to me on the bench even though there were several empty benches nearby. As they had crowded me out I moved up a bit to give myself more space only for the lady next to me to shuffle up close to me again! I decided to move to a nearby vacant bench which turned out to be in a nicer spot than the one I had vacated. Whilst there I was asked to take a photograph of family group who wanted their picture taken standing in front of Windsor Castle.

When Mr C eventually returned half an hour later we walked across the Windsor bridge to visit an antiquarian bookshop that Mr C had remembered from our previous visit to Eton. Next we retraced our steps across the bridge in search of a naughty cake before taking a leisurely boat trip along the Thames to Boveney Lock after which we returned to the hotel to freshen up before dinner.

We dined in The Ivy Royal Windsor Brasserie. The food was lovely (I chose fish and chips followed by mini chocolate truffles) and we had excellent service and plenty of friendly banter with the gentleman who was waiting on us.

We finished our evening in Wetherspoons for a final drink before it was time to turn in for the night.

Created by King Charles II, the Long Walk was introduced in 1680 – although it was not until 1683 that the avenue was extended to its current length. The iconic Copper Horse which stands guard over the Long Walk was also a later addition.

This impressive statue, depicting King George III on horseback, was erected in 1831 to commemorate his significant contribution to Windsor Great Park.

A stroll along the Long Walk and through the Deer Park is the perfect way to soak in the history of the grounds, enjoying a landscape that has barely changed in 1,000 years. Windsor Great Park and forest is home to one of the largest populations of ancient oak trees in northern Europe. In fact, there are trees still standing today that saw William of Normandy ride past on Royal hunts.

Unfortunately we didn’t have quite enough time to walk the full length of the walk to view the statue of King George III.

We were due to meet my nephew for lunch so we spent the morning in Windsor. The first place to visit was The Parish Church of St John the Baptist to see the 1660 painting of The Last Supper. As we arrived outside the church Mr C realised that he had forgotten to pick up his camera. He returned to the hotel to get it which left me plenty of time to find lots of other treasures within the church. When Mr C returned I showed him some of the more interesting features.

As we left we realised that the Changing of the Guard ceremony was soon to take place so we lingered a little so that we could see the soldiers marching out of their barracks on the way to Windsor Castle to take up their guard duty standing down the Ghurkas that we had seen mounting guard on our visit to Windsor Castle.

After watching the soldiers march we walked to the George IV Gateway at Windsor Castle, the start of the three mile tree lined ‘Long Walk’ to the copper statue of George III riding a horse. Being time limited, we didn’t quite reach the statue before we had to turn back.

Along the walk I was presented with my medal for the Platinum Jubilee Challenge, received for my pledge to walk 70 miles for the Queen’s Jubilee and a total of 100 miles for May’s National Walking month. On the Long Walk I had an interesting encounter with an Old English Sheepdog. He came to say hello to Mr C then circled around me pushing his way through my legs from behind before jumping up and gently putting his front paws on my shoulders. The owner was surprised at his behaviour as he doesn’t normally do that.

Back in town we made our way to Clarence Brasserie & Tearoom where we were meeting my nephew and his good lady for lunch. We had intended to sit outside but a few spots of rain and an ominous cloud led us to retreat indoors. This turned out to be a good choice; shortly afterwards the heavens opened! It was lovely to see my nephew and we had a good catchup over lunch.

After lunch, Mr C and I went to Henley where I was hoping to pick up a couple of outdoor clothing items from the Rohan outdoor shop. I arrived to find that the summer waterproof jacket I was hoping for was not due to arrive until the end of June. The fleece I was looking for was in stock but not in my size. Apparently, I was the second person that day who had enquired about the jacket in that size and they don’t stock all sizes these days due to online shopping. Well to my mind that was two sales lost on that day for not adequately stocking shops with merchandise. Before returning to the hotel we had just enough time for tea and cake, in my case the cake was passion fruit and frangipane.

We dined in a Thai Restaurant, The Giggling Squid. The service and food were excellent but for the second night running we had been placed within the fierce, icy blast of the air conditioning unit! We had a nightcap in Weatherspoon’s before returning to the hotel for our final night before returning home the next morning.
