After breakfast we called into Waterstones so that Mr C could pick up the latest book in a series that he is reading. After that he had to join a work teleconference for an hour or so. Whilst he was doing this I walked around Chichester photographing things I had seen whilst we were sussing out restaurants.

We met at Cloisters Cafe before heading to the Cathedral, only to find that a university graduation ceremony was about to start. We decided to visit the Cathedral later in the day and headed, instead to the Novium, which is a museum that houses the remains of Roman Baths and artefacts as well as a display on smuggling. There was also a temporary exhibition (on tour from the V&A) about the history of board games. As a board gaming lady I found the display interesting and nostalgic with games old and new.

Lunch was in the Chichester Cafe which is one of a few run by the Real Eating Company. The food they serve is nice and fresh and a little different. I opted for a hummus, beetroot and mozzarella toastie with salad leaves, beetroot and carrot; it was delicious.

After lunch we headed to the Pallant House Gallery where two birds looking like dodos sit atop pillars to the main entrance. They are in fact ostriches, which are from the crest of the Peckhams for whom the house was originally built. Pallant House is home to a collection of modern British art. The gallery also has a programme of temporary exhibitions, the current one being ‘Virginia Woolf: an exhibition inspired by her writings’. It would be fair to say that I enjoyed the gallery more that Mr C did.

Following our visit to the gallery we sat outside a small cafe, soaking up the rays with a glass of wine before returning to the Cathedral. We enjoyed the Cathedral and it had some interesting art. As we arrived one of the stewards mentioned to us a piece of modern art that was currently being displayed in the Cathedral. When I picked up the leaflet to find out what it was supposed to be I noticed that there were other pieces of art both inside and outside the Cathedral. I had seen the artwork that was outside earlier in the day and had mistaken one for a billboard frame and the other as being something to do with the roof renovations.

We relaxed in our room before dining in the Jetty in the Harbour Hotel. I chose Haddock and Chips which was delicious. Before returning to the B&B we went to a nearby pub called The Park, which was bustling with people, although most of them were outside due to the glorious weather.

The warmth of the early morning sunshine made it possible for us to eat breakfast outside on the hotel terrace. We lingered a while enjoying the atmosphere even after it had started to rain. After a while the wind changed direction and drove the rain underneath the covered area, in our direction. We beat a hasty retreat inside and as we did so the light rain turned into a torrential downpour. There was no point in going out in such weather so we returned to our room where we could enjoy watching the rain and the comings and goings in Tartini Square whilst keeping dry.

When the rain had subsided we made our way down to the square for a drink before visiting the Giuseppe Tartini Memorial Room. Tartini who was born in Piran and christened in St George’s cathedral in 1692 became a violin virtuoso and composer. The Town Square and the hotel we were staying in were named after him. The custodian of the museum gave an interesting talk on the man and the collection.

Next we intended to visit the Museum of Underwater Activities but unfortunately it was closed so I took a leisurely stroll along the harbour whilst Mr C risked his ears again by climbing the bell tower next to St George’s Cathedral. After this it was time for lunch which we enjoyed sitting on the seafront with a glass of wine, watching boats coming in and out of the harbour.

After lunch we visited the Sergej Masera Maritime Museum which is dedicated to Slovenia’s naval history and heritage. After the museum made our way to the art gallery which was exhibiting paintings that were all painted in the same week. The artist was required to present a blank canvas to the gallery and complete his/her work within one week. It was an interesting exhibition with many painting styles. There were some excellent works of art on the walls along with some that didn’t quite work for me.

On our way back to the hotel to freshen up before dinner we noticed that the temperature was 82o after the rain had cooled the temperature down earlier in the day. After dinner we spent the evening chatting with one of our fellow travelers who was holidaying on his own.

After breakfast our first port of call was the Jesuit Church which we had been meaning to visit all week. The inside reminded me very much of an ornate wedding cake. We then ventured into the Museum of Art which is located in the Culture and Convention Centre (KKL). We were tempted there by the following description:

Covering an area of 2′100 square meters, the museum has temporary exhibitions displaying significant works of modern art, as well as exhibitions from the museum’s own collection, with an emphasis on 19th and 20th century landscape painting and international art from 1960.

Nearly all the art on display was extremely modern and not what I think of as ‘art’ and I didn’t notice any landscape paintings… The temperature was in the 90s so after viewing the artworks we hoped to have refreshing drink on the terrace, but the cafe/bar was shut. We left the art museum and found an alternative cafe where we could sit and chill out before making our way to the train station for the start of our home journey.

On the way back to the hotel to pick up our baggage we visited a very old church before picking up sandwiches to enjoy on our train journey back to the airport. When we arrived at the station there was train just about to leave and Mr C decided we would rush to catch this one rather than wait for the one we had planned to catch. The cases then had to be hauled up and down stairs and along the carriages until we arrived in the correct part of the train for our tickets!

Not quite the relaxing journey it should have been, especially in the soaring temperatures. But it did mean that we arrived at the airport in plenty of time for the flight. The airport was cool due to the air conditioning, which was quite welcome.

Our flight was a little late leaving, but the pilot/flight was much better than our outward journey experience. It was also nice to see Birmingham without cloud as we landed, that has got to be a first for many years…

Witley Parish Church has ten stained glass windows of which nine depict scenes from the New Testament; The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Adoration of the Shepherds, The Adoration of the Magi, The Baptism of Christ, After the Resurrection; the miraculous catch of fish, The Resurrection, Peter and John healing a cripple and The Supper at Emmaus. Then tenth window shows the Worship of the Golden Calf, a scene from the Old Testament and has no apparent connection to the rest of the windows.

From the guide book:

The ten windows were executed by Joshua Price in 1719 and 1721 from designs by an Italian artist, believed to be Francesco Sleter (1685 – 1775). They combine stained glass and enamel painting and are the finest example in Britain of early eighteenth-century windows of this type. In the 1970s they were in danger of collapse and were restored to their present fine condition. When the windows were transferred from the Cannons Chapel, the apertures were nine inches too long. This was corrected by adding the somewhat incongruous golden stained border to the base of each window.

If you hover over the windows it will show you which of the windows they are.
