Following the visit to the abbey we moved on to Beisbroek which is just outside Bruges and is one of two big country estates situated side by side in the woods. Beisbroek covers 80 hectares and contains trees, footpaths, heathland, picnic areas, a deer compound, a cafeteria and a castle that serves as interactive nature centre, a planetarium and an observatory.

The first port of call was to be the cafeteria for lunch although we managed to do an accidental detour on the way. The woodlands were magnificent, the trees were showing off their spectacular autumn colours and the ground was covered with a carpet of leaves.

After my hectic week of Union business I took advantage of the lovely weather at the weekend and went to visit one of my favourite gardens, Hodnet Hall. The garden has lots of features and and is a wonderful place to relax. It is only open some weekends and bank holidays so I was lucky to be able to catch it un a sunny day when I wasn’t busy. And I do so love the bluebells at this time of year

There have been gardens at Hodnet since the 11th century when the Heber-Percy family constructed their first house in the parkland, their serious development began in 1921 by the late Brigadier Heber-Percy. Today, the 60+ acres are renowned as amongst the finest in the country. Forest trees provide a wonderful backdrop for formal gardens planted to give delight during every season, woodland walks amongst flowering shrubs and a daisy chain of ornamental pools.

The Restaurant serves light lunches and afternoon teas.
Special Open Days 12 noon to 5 p.m.

You are going to have to wait for more pictures of my recent visit (although here is another), but for a taster some pictures from previous visits are here and the map of the gardens can be found here.
