In WW1 he tried to join the navy twice. The first time he did join up and received the Kings shilling but his mother sent it back again. The second time he tried his boss stopped him.

He was a violinist and played with several orchestras: Manchester Symphony Orchestra, Levenshulme Symphony Orchestra, Chorlton Symphony Orchestra, his works Orchestra and Manchester Ballet Club. He also had his own Chamber orchestra

After his wife died he moved to Handforth.
