In the grounds just outside the cafeteria, next to the nature centre and planetarium are a number of statues which feature Gods and their related planets. These statues stretched out into the woodlands back to the car park. There was speculation on whether the distances between them was representative to the distances between the planets. The nature centre was supposed to open at 2pm, but after waiting some time it seemed to be closed! So we are non the wiser and the website provides no information on the subject.

I would have taken a few more photos of the statues but some of them were quite creepy with holes for eyes and inverted nipples. I suppose it is just artistic talent, but it didn’t work for me.

On first inspection it looked a little shut, but then the proprietor came to our assistance. It seems we were quite lucky, they were supposed to be closed but had opened because it was the school holidays. I think they must have been glad of our custom because we were the only people in there. We got lots of personal attention and had a good conversation with the proprietor.

Not to mention the delicious indulgence we all took part in. When in Bruges it has to be done at least once

Beisbroek

Following the visit to the abbey we moved on to Beisbroek which is just outside Bruges and is one of two big country estates situated side by side in the woods. Beisbroek covers 80 hectares and contains trees, footpaths, heathland, picnic areas, a deer compound, a cafeteria and a castle that serves as interactive nature centre, a planetarium and an observatory.

The first port of call was to be the cafeteria for lunch although we managed to do an accidental detour on the way. The woodlands were magnificent, the trees were showing off their spectacular autumn colours and the ground was covered with a carpet of leaves.
