The Cragside Dahlia Walk

Whilst researching for some information to go along with this post I came across a new National Trust blog about the Cragside formal garden. The latest post on the blog shows a little tidy up operation on the clock tower view in my recent post.

Welcome to Cragside Gardens

Regular readers will know that Cragside is one of my favourite places to visit. During my recent visit to Northumberland I enjoyed seeing the gardens in a different season. In this post you can see the formal gardens being stripped back and prepared for the summer bedding.

New to me on this visit was the addition of a bird hide just outside the formal gardens. I took the opportunity to sit and rest a while within the hide. I saw many varieties of birds flying too and fro. Unfortunately they have stopped encouraging and feeding the red squirrels that can normally be seen there. A grey squirrel has been seen in the vicinity and there is the worry that it might spread disease amongst the reds…

The Italian Terrace at Cragside

I am going to be busy again for a few days, but before that I shall walk you down to the Formal Gardens. I have found a nice bench where you can sit and enjoy the gardens, I shall meet you there later

The Loggia was probably made at Armstrong’s Elswick works. It is made of cast iron with a glass roof and sides, but is left open at the front. The oak seat was designed to incorporate the flat-topped ‘A’ which Armstrong used as a monogram elsewhere at Cragside, was made by Alan Forster in 2006.
