The last ‘Wake Up to Wogan’ was broadcast on Radio 2 this morning. I know I won’t be alone in missing the gentle, crazy fun that the program brought each morning.
With a lump in his throat, Sir Terry Wogan has said an emotional goodbye to his loyal eight-million strong breakfast audience on Radio 2.
Here, with the help of BBC archives, look back at how – over four decades – he has woken up the nation.
Now what am I going to listen to in the morning whilst I get ready for work?
Chris Evans may surprise you, as he did me, when after years of dislike I began listening to his drive-time show occasionally while travelling around. Give him a chance. Won’t be the same, never could be, but may grow on you. Wogan was a legend, but to be honest I was beginning to feel it was time for something new. Just so long as it wasn’t Jonathon Ross. And there is always Classic FM, or, a “show” that I listen to quite a lot these days, best described as contemplative silence… That often surprises me too.
I will probably forget to change radio stations so I will all likely end up listening to it by default. I do like classic FM and the local radio station is pretty good in the mornings too.
I love contemplative silence first thing in a morning, but is probably not the best option for a working day
Oh yes. We were listening along with lumps in our throat too! Listen to it again on I Player and the Janet & John episode was hilarious!
I must catch up on that, I missed the Janet & John bit.
Am I alone in this but I never took to Wogan.
He isn’t everyones cup of tea. I often don’t like things that other people find hilariously funny!
I’m in that club too Calum, never saw the fascination.
I think ‘Wake Up to Wogan’ was something you would either love or hate.
Never listened to R2; but TW was wonderfully kind to a couple of friends of mine years ago, when they were seeking sponsorship for their hospital radio charity. The Great One couldn’t have been more helpful, responding rapidly to their written request for advice by offering a meeting at his office where he spent half the time ‘phoning slebs direct to muster support. It worked … genuinely nice chap.
What a lovely thing to do, helping your friends like that
CP – We are a fickle bunch; come next year it will be Terry who?
Andrew – Advertising greed threatens to ruin Classic FM.
I shall let you know in a years time
personally i could not stand the guy… his voice just got on my nerves … I am a fan of chris evans though and will miss his drive time show .
It least you won’t have to put up with Terry now!
Is he still doing Eurovision?
He stopped that a while ago. I never watched that though, I hated it.

The Floral Dance is just the thing for a young bear
