Cherie’s Place – Thought for the Week

Geometry has two great treasures; one is the Theorem of Pythagoras; the other, the division of a line into extreme and mean ratio. The first we may compare to a measure of gold, the second we may name a precious jewel.

      This idea of a thought evolved over the week and I wasn’t sure if I had got it right ;-)

      The photo (link) was posted first in another thread and then the quote came easily to fit with it…

      I am also looking forward to see what becomes of the little seed I planted :-)

    As for the Pythagorean theorem: Did you read Huxley’s “Young Archimedes”? If not: Herewith highly recommended.

    Your quote compares Pythagoras to a ‘measure of gold’, whereas I always associate dividing a line up as the ‘Golden Ratio’. So I had to do a google and found this site really fascinating.

    I quite fancy one of these gauges. I’m not sure where diamonds come into it though, but cutting all those facets sure looks complicated. :)

      Yes perhaps the comparisons are back to front. The dividing the line up is the ‘Golden Ratio’ along with other names.
