Hadrian’s Wall was built by the order of Emperor Hadrian, following his visit to Britain in AD 122. It was planned as a continuous wall with a milecastle every Roman mile (1.48 kilometres) and two turrets equally spaced between each milecastle. The wall, with its defensive ditches and large forts, stretched from coast to coast, a distance of 80 Roman miles (approximately 120 kilometres or 75 miles). It formed the northenmost frontier of the Roman Empire.*

“The Great Wall of Britain”
Are they going to build a new one when Scotland gains independence?
That would be one to ask my readers who live up north
You do know, of course, that the wall was built to keep the English in and not to keep the Scots out.
HaHaHa
Lets see what Scotland has to say first about independence. They’ve just about got passport control set up at Gretna Green to deal with the majority of visitors and illegal immigrants. There bus station and toilet block is a great start.
A fine reminder. Once I enjoyed travelling along the wall.
Previously I had seen monuments along the wall but I had never seen the wall itself! One of my things to do on this holiday was to see the wall itself.
After leaving Wallington Mr C was determined to track down some stone… We traveled through wild countryside opening and closing gates to keep sheep in there fields. Eventually this portion of the wall revealed itself
Tracking down some stones is easy, just go to Wallsend!
You can, literally, see the Wall’s end.
You need to give me specific instructions for the next time I visit
This reminds me of my visit some years ago – I actually fell backwards off the wall at one place – quite a long drop, too!
That sounds a little alarming!!
