Lewes Castle is a medieval castle in the town of Lewes in East Sussex, England. Originally called Bray Castle, it occupies a commanding position guarding the gap in the South Downs cut by the River Ouse and occupied by the towns of Lewes and Cliffe. It stands on a man-made mount just to the north of the high street in Lewes, and is constructed from local limestone and flint blocks.

It is interesting that the castle was built on a man-made mount, just to the north of the high street in Lewes. We would normally expect castle architecture and military men to be located away from the town’s citizens and shops, to make their defensive role more effective. What did the good burghers of Lewes think at the time?
I don’t think it is the only castle to be situated like this.
It’s a beauty of a castle, Cherry, and my first thought was “all that stone!”
The stone is fabulous
You visit so many interesting and beautiful places. Wonderful series again, Cherry. It is amazing to see how they built this castle. I love the brick/stone-work.
Thank you
A beautiful and very interesting castle – so much history too.
There is a lot to see in the town as well, although we didn’t have time to explore.
Oh I have been to this castle twice.
But in both situations, the weather was either cloudy or gloomy.
So you’re very luck indeed.
The sunshine helped show up the finer details of the castle and surroundings.
