Bread RollI am sure you have all had enough of meetings by now, I know I have.  So I shall now return to York and the photographs of the Blue Bicycle that I promised to post.

The food was excellent and I would certainly go back again next time I visit York.  Instead of the normal bread roll on a side plate we were presented with little flower pots of freshly baked bread served with a slice of roasted garlic bulb and butter.

For my main course I decided to try something different and opted for pan-fried Bubble and Squeak with poached Duck Egg and Brown Sauce, it was delicious.  By the time I had finished the main course I was quite full so I opted for a light dessert.  I chose a contrast of Apples with Cinnamon Shortbread which was apples set in apple jelly with apple sorbet served in a glass cup, which was nice and refreshing.  I must confess that it wasn’t until I had half eaten the desert that I remembered I was supposed to be photographing it!  So on this occasion you will have to use your imagination ;-)

I thought you were going to tell us how it got the name “Blue Bicyle”.
I bet it was a French bicycle. I can smell that garlic from here! :(
Sorry to be a ‘Moaning Minnie’ but…..
….bubble & squeak doesn’t usually have ‘red bits’ in it. Well, the traditional Birmingham B&S didn’t. It was left-over cabbage and potatoes. Mmmmmmm!
In fact, I don’t see any cabbage in your portions. :(
Never mind, as long as you enjoyed it and, as you say, would go back again, that’s all that matters. :)
    Cheers…..Bernard.
PS I bet the brown sauce wasn’t HP as my Mum gave us. :D

I have no idea why it was called the Blue Bicycle…

But I can confirm that the bubble & squeak was mostly cabbage and potato, it did have a bit of carrot added which worked for the the full combination of flavours in the dish. Now you mention it, I do see in the photo something that looks a little bit like red onion. I don’t remember tasting any of that when I ate it though…

Bubble and squeak as you describe it, is something I enjoy which is one of the reasons I chose the dish and for me it didn’t disappoint.

I can’t say one way or another on the brown sauce because I always use HP fruity sauce :-)

    Sorry about that. :(
