Whilst going about my daily business at work I was drawn to look at the dictionary that is stood up next to my in/out/pending trays. I immediately forgot about it.
When it was lunch time I rustled in my bag and got my lunch time eats out and placed them on the table. As I did this there was loud banging sort of noise. It made me turn my head and made a colleague on the next bank of desks to me jump. The dictionary had fallen on the floor. I joked we had an office ghost playing around and we had a little chuckle together. I picked it up and put it back on my desk and we both immediately forgot about it.
During the day I had been trying to phone a colleague, but all I got was an answering machine, I didn’t want to leave a message because the subject needed a conversation. When I made my first call to that colleague after the lunch time incident there was no dial tone when I picked up my phone receiver! As I pressed the catch on the phone to try and reset or see if there was a problem, there was a loud bang. The dictionary had fallen on the floor again!!
That dictionary has been placed like that on my previous desk for 10 months (without incident) and also for the 4 weeks I have been in my current job (without incident).
Speaking of ghosts reminds me of a strange incident at work today. Both my colleague and I heard the noise of footfall and were aware of a presence behind us. When we looked there was no-one there…
The dictionary is now placed firmly on it’s side!!

Your dictionary was simply providing a bit of ‘action’!
Now there is a thought… I wonder which word I could get it to play out next week
I know quite a few people who think dictionaries are spooky, per se, and thus would diagnose the placing of your dictionary on its side as but an attempt to cure the symptoms. … Ahem …
Ah yes… I think the placing of the dictionary in that way will spread the disease elsewhere
But the placing of the dictionary in that way will stop my colleague jumping, which is what happened when the book landed next to her desk with a big BANG!!
Dictionaries have a great sense of importance. They demand respect and attention. They refuse to be ignored and neglected. I have had dictionaries which, very mischievously, for ten minutes, would erase the word I was looking for, and then put it back on again with no warning.
I would suggest that you give a pat to your dictionary every morning. And also consult it often, even if you don’t need it. It might cure the problem, Cherie.:-)

They do indeed need to be revered and this one is a might tomb. At home it is replaced with a more modern version but the words of this original one are still valued. And what better place than the office to value such things.

A dictionary that is “stood up” falls over twice…
Not very spooky. Try laying it down well away from the edge of the table, and if it manages to jump to the floor let me know and I will come charging on my steed to impale your ghost. I am used to fighting foes that are not really there.
Gravity and vibration do much of the work that many so readily attribute to ghosts.
Ahh Don, I am very sceptical about ‘ghosts’ and accounts of them also. Some of the ghost accounts I believe to be real but the explanation of them is best understood by thinking science and nature.
The dictionary wasn’t next to the edge of the desk and it was wide and sturdy enough not to fall over. However if it did fall over the motion would have meant it ended up on the floor. I could have accepted it falling over the first time, someone might have picked it up and placed it unstably but I placed it back so that it was stable. Even then I may have dismissed it, but the no dial tone as the book fell made me ponder…
Co-incidence? Maybe… But from a scientific point of view there is no such thing as a co-incidence…
I am quite a rational person and dismiss most of the ghostly and other related claims. I do not believe in ghosts, but I do believe there are unexplained things. On analysis, some of those things do not fit what with what we scientifically know/believe and that gives me pause for thought and further discussion with friends

I am with Mickie on this one. When I used to loose my temper with my son as a teenager, the lights in our house used to flicker on and off. His friends were in awe!
I bet they were! Just after my Dad died, there were lots of strange electrical occurrences in both my house and my Mum’s house.
