I spent New Years Eve in a local Cantonese restaurant and then watched ‘Jools Annual Hootenany‘ with a glass of bubbly to see in the New Year. I couldn’t resist trying to take a few photos of the show. I have spent a lazy day reading and playing board games and now I am looking forward to roast duck for dinner. Tomorrow I go back to work and I am not really ready…
For those who are wondering, an electrician did turn up yesterday morning to look at my flickering lights. He asked what the problem was, watched the lights flickering and declared it was a loose connection in the fuse box. He went on to say that unfortunately he wasn’t allowed to touch the fuse box and he would have to phone one of his colleagues and ask him to visit later in the day.
The second electrician did turn up. He asked what the problem was, watched the lights flickering and said, ‘I don’t think it is a fuse box problem’. After trying a few of the light switches and the fan in the en-suite he decided it was a problem with the light fitting in the en-suite. When he investigated he found that the ceiling fan fed off the wiring to the light fitting and that it had become loose. Instead off putting the old light fitting back up, he very kindly put the new one up instead. The new light fitting had been put to one side for when the decorator came. So now all the electrics are fully functional again.
Enjoy the duck. I’m ready for fish for a while… Except that I forgot to defrost it.

The Duck was declicious and Mr C openened another bottle of bubbly to accompany it
We have been eating varied meals over the week (including fish) so I am not maxed out with too much eating.

Don’t you hate it when the plumber says it’s an electrical problem and the electrician says it’s a plumbing and so on? Glad your problem is sorted.

1. What chance would we have of designing and building Spitfires nowadays?
2. Are we de-evolving nowadays?

Yes I am still waiting… although the second person to turn up was very thorough even down to insisting on finding some filler to fix a hole by the light fitting!

Well, designing and building Spitfires required technical intelligence and competence, of a kind that seems in short supply ever since so many people were told to go and get degrees rather than work at apprenticeships and actually learn how to do something useful, but I suppose it only takes a few people to do the really clever stuff and the rest just need to bash bits of metal together and screw in screws. Not that I’d be capable of any level of assistance, probably – I’d mess it up along with the rest of us. Anyway, fingers crossed that your lights are fixed and we can all sleep easy until the next crisis ::)
See… I even managed to mess up the making of a smiley, bashing in 4 eyes instead of two. Heck!
Ahh! you meant technical competence in general. I sometimes forget that is in short supply because I work in one of the few places that still does provide apprenticeships. And just up the road from my workplace they provide ongoing training. One is land equipments and the other is air.
Well just so long as nobody comes at us from the sea then we’ll be alright then
