A licence was granted in 1331 to John de Broughton ‘for Divine service in his oratory at Broughton’. It is a rare example of a 14th century private chapel. The fixed stone altar slab supported on three solid brackets and the encaustic tiles on the floor are all of the original date.*
The chapel can be viewed through a squint in the corner of Queen Anne’s Room.

How many does it seat?
Upstairs or down?
Aren’t those stained glass windows just magnificent!
The colours are superb.
The stained glass windows are superb
Stained Glass windows fascinate me.
I can’t remember which cathedral now.
There’s one private prayer room located above the porch, where you have to squeeze through a very narrow stairwell in order to reach there.
Maybe it’s Chichester?
Or Chester?
I do not know…
I have been to Chester and I have not noticed a private prayer room…
It was on my list to visit Chichester this year, but I think that may have slipped to next year now. When I visit I will let you know if the private prayer room you mention is there.
