On these two days, Jesus made a number of appearances and addresses, most famously to “cleanse” the temple of money changers and merchants who had set up business in God’s house. Jesus also appeared at the temple courts to debate the priests and community leaders.
Matthew 21:12-25:13 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus at the Temple
12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13 “It is written,” he said to them, “‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’[a] but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’[b]”14 The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, “Hosanna to the Son of David,” they were indignant.
16 “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him.
“Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read,
“‘From the lips of children and infants
you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”
17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.
They already had money changers in those days?!
Definitely not doing £/€ business.
Some things never change…
The money changers in the temple was once account that sticks in my mind from my days of RE at school.
The things that always stuck in my mind from Sunday School days were the miracles.
i agree somethings never change
they get worse and worst with the greed of man
Sadly man doesn’t learn from past mistakes.
it seems that there were money lenders forever Cherie… this scene likely started the revolt against Jesus….peter:)
Some things never change! I agree this event was probably the catalyst.
i have seen a reproduction of this painting and remember being moved by it, CP.
I would love to see the full size version.
