Mary Magdalene Recognises Jesus

This sculpture by David Wynne shows the moment when Mary recognises Jesus on the morning of his resurrection.

A sign next to the sculpture states that the figures are so thin it is as though everything has been stripped from them except the core of their being.

Jesus said: ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ Supposing him to be the gardener she said, ‘Sir, if you have taken him, tell me where you have laid him and I will go and get him.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned and cried out, ‘Teacher!’ Jesus said to her, ‘Do not try to hold on to me because I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brother and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ So Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord!’

John 20:15-18

The figures are certainly completely stripped down

Yes… The sculpture doesn’t work for me. The words from the Bible portray the scene more vividly.

In this bible passage Jesus has risen (fully whole) from death, and his physical body is the same as it was before he was crucified.
