This Mesolithic hut is part of the Maelmin Heritage Trail at Millfield. The roof has been damaged by the weather, hence the ragged look. As you can see the supports are tied together.
Maelmin was the name of a royal township that existing near the modern day village of Milfield in Anglo-Saxon times. Today it is the site of a series of reconstructions of local archaeological structures.
These enable visitors to experience the scale of the originals which have been lost to time.
a henge, a mesolithic hut and a dark-age house
The reconstructions are faithful interpretations based upon archaeological evidence.
Once there were many henges in the area surrounding Milfield – dating from around 2,000BC. The Mesolithic hut dates from the stone-age and is based on a find at Howick, near Alnwick. The Dark-Age house was found a Tarmac’s Cheviot Quarry which is located next to Maelmin.

Grey seal? In the middle of a field?
The original hut was beside the sea at Craster, so grey seal was quite feasible there.
This is just a reconstruction at a heritage site. A couple more pics of the trail tomorrow
Looks like ‘Devonshire Dumpling’s’ place to me?
I hope she isn’t checking out this thread
quite a reconstruction…
Mine’s up as we tied the knot
Yes and it needs a little TLC
I love it Cherie. But then I am a sucker for an ancient site!
More about the site coming up soon
It was a lot of hard work making a house (if you can call it that) in those days. Great photos and idea for the theme Cherie.
I should imagine it was a little bit drafty too!
I’m so glad I don’t have to live like that. We have it so easy. don’t we? Love the background information! We’ve come a long way over the past 10,000 years.
I would never get all my clutter in there and what about my internet connection
I’d love to see that reconstruction. Fine post Cherie, and thanks for your visits.
I am sure you would find it very interesting You are welcome
This post is so very interesting, and I’m positive it will be the most unique of the category posts from all the participants in the hunt!! Excellent.
My TIED is nautical this time…come by for a viewing if you can find time. Have a terrific Saturday!!!

I am glad you found it interesting Now my site is back I can get around to visiting everyone who has visited me
Clever Cherie! Fascinating. All I’ve seen of these ancient constructions is the neolithic reconstruction out on the Levels, beside the Sweet Track (Westhay, Somerset), so this is a real knowledge-expander. Life must have been truly ‘nasty, brutish & short’ in those days. Great pix, as always … !
I haven’t seen the one you mention, it sounds interesting. More on the site coming up now
I would loved to have played in here as a kid.
I am sure that would be great fun
You’d have had to tie me down to get me to spend any time in that hut, even way back then.
Maybe any port in a storm
