Stokesay castle as we see it today was built in the 1280s to 90s by Laurence of Ludlow who was a wool merchant and one of the richest men in England. Although it appears military in appearance it was not intended to withstand a serious siege, but was designed to protect his wealth and withstand robbers.

In my imagination, this is what a castle should look, the only thing missing are the knights…
Great pictures, this must have been a great place to visit.
It is a great place to visit. It is only small but every time I visit, it surprises me again!

Visit Shropshire and I will take you round it
Hi Cherie –
Stokesay Castle looks to me exactly as you described it: designed to protect a rich man from robbers than to a fortress to keep soldiers out.
It looks well maintained. Is it still in use (as a stately home or something like that) or…?
It isn’t still in use and it is isn’t furnished. It is maintained as is by English Heritage.
I bet the robbers had a hard time there! Nice captures!
I think the robbers will have been kept a bay.
Stokesley Castle what a gem in the English countryside. Such interesting and delightful photos.
I am sure if you visited you would come away with some great poetry ideas.
