At last we reach Dover Castle, the journey was slightly delayed due to my blog difficulties. I hope it was worth the wait.
Although I am a member of English Heritage I still had to pick tickets up on the way in and I was given an introductory leaflet. When I looked at it I noticed it was in French, I wonder if they thought I was French?
To enter the inner bailey you have to go through Palace Gate:
The inner bailey walls, built by Henry II in the 1180s, are punctuated by 14 projecting rectangular wall towers, enabling defenders to use flanking fire to prevent an an enemy approaching the main curtain walls. The two gateways are well protected between pairs of towers, the earliest English examples of such planning. Both gateways had outer defence works, or barbicans, but on the northern one survives. It’s outer gateway is deliberately not aligned with the inner gateway, to blunt the rush of any attacking force. *
Since they were built the walls have been refaced and reduced in size.

Mais oui, ils ont pensé que vous étiez française, Cherie.
Quel complément. Merci beaucoup
Gah I haven’t been to Dover Castle since I lived in the god forsaken town in the mid 80s
The castle has recently undergone a makeover in the great hall. It is much more interesting than it used to be.
Alas, I do not have such fine an excuse as Jams O’Donnell Esq. (3,100 posts within four years) but I am glad to have found someone to accompany me on my belated visit to Dover Castle.
Once I was determined to visit, it was closed. I am pleased though, that I do at least know two other highlights of Dover: the first two roundabouts after leaving the harbour. Always a great feeling to be back.
I would quite happily accompany you around the castle it is sure to delight
Ah yes those roundabouts always reminded me that I will soon be home. It is a bit confusing when I visit my relatives who have recently moved there because those roundabouts also remind me that I am a long way from home.
Isn’t it funny? For me those roundabouts are a welcome – after all, driving on the eft hand side again.
You accompanying Jams and me? Now that’s excellent an idea. To honour you, Ted might take seat on your right shoulder.
They were always welcoming to me also it is just in the last couple of years they have got confusing.
Well Ted is welcome to sit on my shoulder because that would mean he wouldn’t be staring me out
We are sure to all have fun visit to the castle
Before I forget: The subscription works now! Did you change anything?
Would certainly not be the worst day in my life, us all meeting at Dover Castle, one day. … Or anywhere else. [second great exception today following]
I am so glad the subscription works now
I haven’t changed anything apart from having to re-install all my Wordpress files manually! Which meant I had to use the latest edition of Wordpress, perhaps that is what made the difference…
I think a meet up for us all would be fun
I live just along the coast…
I know
I will let you know next time I am visiting, just in case you want to avoid me
And I thought, it would be a nice gesture felt Mr. Mutley fancy to give us a lift in his poison-green car.
I do wonder if Mr. Mutley would care to join us on our excursion?
The poison-green is putting me off a little though…
I am sure – in case someone were all the time cycling in front of ‘our’ poison-green car’ with a verrrry certain picture/photo on his back, Mr. Mutley would not be able to resist.
The ride to Dover, of course, would take a bit longer.
I hope that pic isn’t the one of me that has been touted around the country this week. It is sure to scare everyone off!!
CherryPie!! Nahhh!!! Please don’t try to tell you don’t know what kind of boobture it would have to be.
