The ruins of St Mary’s Abbey are situated in the Yorkshire Museum gardens. This is all that remains of the Benedictine monastery that was once one of the most wealthy and powerful in England.
The abbey estate occupied the entire site of the Museum Garden and the abbot was one of the most powerful clergymen of his day, on a par with the Archbishop of York.
I am looking forward to a few hours in York tomorrow.
I hope you have a good time. I should imagine it has a good atmosphere at this time of year
Delightful. There is something about ruined abbeys
I find them quite imposing and romantic.
The impermanence of it all. Nothing lasts.
Oh some things last, but those are not material things.
Beautiful ruins of St Mary’s Abbey Cherie… i like the framing that you used in this shot….peter:)
Thank you Peter
I remember having to look up some information about this monastery when I was looking at posting a blog. It was quite a revelation to discover who was in charge then. Nice perspective here by the way and a relaxing place away from the shops for an hour.
It is a nice relaxing place and surprising that there is no sign of the shops that are so close by. I love how it is full of wildlife too.
A wonderful photo and yes, there is something about ruined Abbeys. I think I have too much imgination sometimes
There is no such thing as too much imagination. Imagination is what makes us tick, leads to creativity and exploration of ideas
