Lovely pic – awful PoMo architecture.

This architecture is not really to my taste. But I do like some modern architecture in this vein where it contrasts with the old.

This however does not work on any level for me.

  2. The Thames is a real mish mash of architectural styles

I actually do like the look of such stuff, from afar, loving all the glass, but so often they are shoddily constructed and leaky, Maybe well constructed by the Thames though.

Although I am not really a fan of this line up of buildings I do like the building on the left, there is something about it.

I also like the Pyramid of glass at the Louvre, there is just something about it in comparison to the surroundings. I also like the Selfridge’s building in Birmingham for the same reasons.

      • JD says:

the pyramid of glass at the Louvre looks great from the inside but from the outside it is just…… well it is what architects and dogs have in common; architects do it to townscapes, dogs do it to lampposts :)

one thing not mentioned about all these steel and glass buildings is that they become very shabby very quickly – they do not ‘weather’ and look awful (even more awful than when they are first built)

They do also get dirty very quickly, I used to work in a glass and steel building. Working in one of the ones in this picture must be a bit like being in a gold fish bowl.

I do intend to try and get a photo of the Selfridges building and there may just be an opportunity to snap that pyramid later in the year ;-)

    Questions to myself:
    – Would you like to live there?
    Answer: No!
    – Would you like to work there, then?
    No.
    – Well, would you, at least, admit that what you see is great architecture?
    No. It’s ugly, it’s lifeless.

What I do not say: A great fire might not be the worst to happen, for a change.

How can you not like that! I just saw on CNN the other day how the Tower Bridge is sporting the Olympic Rings. That would make a cool picture! :)
