The water canons that are part of the fountain display are easier to see in the second two photos. They were not operating when we walked through the gardens. Here is a lovely black and white video of the fountains, water canons and the underground pumps, dating back to around the 1960s (I think). You will have to polish off your French in order to understand the commentary, although it is not necessary because the video is enjoyable without.

Oh, magnificent. The first time we were in Paris the water canon were working, and we spent hours sitting in the sun watching the sequence and waiting for them.
I’ve not seen them working since.
They probably just fire them on special occasions, I expect they are expensive to run.
