Melting Point

So far it is not the worst snow I have seen in recent years, but everything seems to have ground to a halt. Schools closed, buses not running and many people (including me) sent home from work at lunch time. Having said it is not the worst snow, the roads are pretty bad due to the snow being rather wet and I was glad to get home and park the car up on the drive.

It stopped snowing for a while in the afternoon but it has started up again now.  Unfortunately I have to venture out in it later and it will have to be on foot…

We have a term we use …cabinned up! Fasten down the hatches and keep warm. Wine chilling, in for the night nay the weekend. Love the B&W shot.

I didn’t have to go out in the end :-)

So the hatches were fastened down, a board game was put on the table and a glass of wine was poured ;-)

      Heaven :-)

Just a mile or so up the road from us my friend couldn’t even see her drive because of the snow; we had sleet that disappeared. Very boring! But safe. Take care when venturing out as it is sure to freeze later.

The change in weather is the same here. At work which is about three miles away there was far less snow than here.

The roads near me are quite treacherous. I didn’t go out in the end. The snow started up again and my Mum called and said we shouldn’t visit tonight.

Staying at home was the sensible thing to do.

  5. It’s rather thin in London.
So pathetic not even enough to build a snow dog x

No snow to speak of in Devon. Just slush most of the day. Yuk.
    Lovely icicles!

    • CherryPie says:

The icicles quite blew me away and my picture doesn’t really do them justice.

I spotted them when I looked up whilst sitting reading my book in the chair by the window. It took me a couple of hours to venture out into the cold to take a photo of them ;-)

The one thing I like about a slight thaw and then a freeze is the icicles. Interesting as to what is to come in the next few days.

It makes me laugh to hear that a bit of snow shuts everything down over there Cherie… it’s just another day where we live… i like your pictures… icicles are fun to capture….peter:)

It makes me smile and despair in equal measures. The snow used to be far worse over here and the country never ground to a halt. It is sad that this country has lost the skills to be able to cope in a snowy situation especially when it lasts for only one day!

    I hate snow! :)
Oldies like me will remember the winter of 62/63 – I was learning to drive during that. In a Mini no less!! :)

    • CherryPie says:

I was just a teeny tot when that winter occurred so I don’t remember it. But I do recall a particular bad winter in the early 80s (81 I think). Deep snow and genuinely not being able to get into work, it was so cold the buses had seized up… But despite that, the country hadn’t ground to a halt!

For some reason this country has forgotten how to cope with even a slight downfall of snow…

I fondly remember the time I first drove in atrocious snowy conditions. The adverse weather caused a power cut which meant my alarm didn’t go off, I was late for setting of to a choir reunion, I leapt into my car without thinking!

I was half way along my journey to the choir reunion which involved a practice in the morning and a concert in the evening when I realised that the snow drifts at the side of the road were at least 4 times the height of my car!!! I wondered at my stupidity, but thought I am half way there now sooo…

We had the morning practice and the weather had got even worse. After the practice I dropped one of the choir ladies of near to her house which was not far from the place where we had met for the choir practice. When I dropped her off she gave me detailed instructions on how to drive in the snow. Every time I drive in the snow I think of her.

It was a complete white out on my journey home, I missed my turning on one occasion and had to retrace my steps. I also experienced my first slide in the snow and the best response to recover from that!

Eventually I got home safe and sound. That was the day the M6 ground to a halt and became impassible due to the adverse weather and people were stuck in their cars for many hours.

There were lots of learning points in that journey!!

  10. Make sure you wrap up warm if you’re going out in the snow, and put some good heavy boots on; I’ve been out in the snow already this weekend, and its frozen under the surface, and its quite slippy…
