St Nicolas church as it stands today was completed around 1500 to 1530. There is some evidence that to suggest that the church was used as both a prison and a hospital after the Second Battle of Newbury in 1664.

The stained glass is very fine, and I particularly like the angels in that beautiful blue
It is a beautiful window
Lovely inside and out. These are priceless.
It was an unexpected gem
Great captures, Cherry, the church is a beautiful building. I can imagine that it served as a hospital, but as a prison as well? That’s quite surprising.
Whilst researching for this post the history was a little sparse. That information came from a leaflet within the church, but they didn’t expand on it.
This is such a beautiful church Cherie and your presentation of it is superb….peter:)
It was an unplanned delight on our journey to Winchester
Cherie this is beautiful. I cannot imagine something built 400 years ago as here it is old if built in the 1700s.
We have some extremely old things here in England
Gosh, such beautiful design. I love those stained glass windows. I definitely need to visit Winchester one day.
Wait till you see inside the Cathedral, I haven’t posted those photos yet
