Inspiration is often found above one’s head and deep under the ego. I very, very often recall the most inspirational chap I ever personally met. We were both Corporals in the RAF and I was an Officer Cadet. He was three years younger than I and my Gym Instructor, intent on making chaps like me, chaps like him.

William Charles Common Steele. He played rugger for Scotland and the RAF was his day job.

I was on the floor of the Gym at the very end of any vestige of arm and shoulder strength. Exhausted. His boots (OK, plimpsols) appeared inches from my eyes and his soft Scottish brogue boomed down as from Heaven itself. “Come along Sirrr. It’s only pain”.

    I managed three more push-ups.

What a beautiful photo. I have a triptych of an English bluebell woods on canvas above my bed.

This inspires me, too, Cherie – thinking about the lovely bluebell woods to visit in the spring

  6. I went to Banstead Woods a few weeks ago.
It’s one of the best places to see bluebells in SW London. ;)
Shame, it was the wrong time while I was there – still I had a lovely 5-mile walk in the countryside.
