‘A man from Gieves, the naval outfitters, came to measure me for my uniform, the trying on of which my father personally supervised. I was proud of the blue, round jacket with its brass buttons and cadet’s white collar tab and of my naval cap, and paraded in them before my sister and brothers.’

i like the story and the man from Grieves.. and the things in the window Cherie… the reflections from the window are just as interesting….peter:)
The young man was a future King
I find window reflections fascinating
The cut was very straight compared to WW2 – do you prefer that?
I think it would depend on who was wearing it
Do you know this firm outfitted George V as well, Cherie?
I did, his photo is in the book which is part of the display.
Try to find a book called “The Savile Row Story” by Richard Walker. It’s fascinating.
Where was the photo taken? It wasn’t the shop in Savile Row.
I wonder if that is the book that is showing in the window. It pictures Edward Prince of Wales and Prince George Duke of York. I think the words in my quote are those of Edward.
This photo was taken in Winchester.
Very nice. There’s a retail name to remember, if ever there was. They used to have a branch in Portsmouth – they may still, for all I know!
Funny you should mention Portsmouth, I am in the middle of writing a post about the Historic Darkyard
Maybe I meant Historic Dockyard…
Just maybe
