This sculpture is by David Backhouse, a Somerset artist who also created Memorial to Animals in War in London.
‘This sculpture is inspiring in its own right, and also changes the way you look at the setting. The pilgrim seems to both belong here, and to be passing through’ (Dee Price)*

You have convinced me that another visit to the Bishops’ Palace is a must – it is only down the road an hour from here, Cherie
I should have mentioned we were visiting. It would have been lovely to meet up with you again
One has to wonder (well, I do, anyway) why the pilgrim is as bald as a coot. And how? Is it a hair folicle problem or did he get the only sharp knife in the county for Christmas? Or maybe, just maybe the sculptor was sponsored by Gillette.
Beautiful archway. One is drawn to walk through it.
Although the artwork is entitled pilgrim, I saw a monk. So the lack of hair did not strike me as odd, in my mind it was monk’s tonsure.
The archway does lead to the feeling to walk through it
Superb statue – so atmospheric.
The statue is well placed.
Rather lanky pilgrim?

Impressive piece of artwork. He looks a little creepy, though. But I can see from your posts that a revisit is due!
That is interesting, I don’t find him as creepy. I see him as thoughtful…
