The Conduit at the bottom of Sherborne’s South Street.
The hexagonal 16th-century structure originally stood in the north cloisters of the abbey, where it was used for washing by the monks.
It was moved to this site after Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539

Never heard of one.
Coffee is on
Many ancient religious buildings have such places for the monks to wash. Sometimes called a lavatorium.
The ceiling is fantastic. Just look at that old timber.
The detail is lovely
Lovely photos and the ceiling is superb
Thanks Caroline
Interesting that someone took the trouble of saving it after the dissolution. So many religious places were just plundered for building stone. It is very beautiful.
I love finding these unexpected gems both at home and abroad
