St Boniface Church - Bunbury

St Boniface’s Church stands prominently in the village of BunburyCheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.[1] The church dates mainly from the 14th century. Its features include the Ridley chapel, the alabaster chest tomb of Sir Hugh Calveley and the tomb of Sir George Beeston. Raymond Richards, author of Old Cheshire Churches, considers it is architecturally one of the most important examples of its period in Cheshire.[2] Alec Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of ‘best’ English parish churches.[3] It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Malpas. Its benefice is combined with that of St Jude, Tilstone Fearnall.[4]

There are so many places to visit in your neck of the woods, Cherry. If I lived there, I’d want to see them all!

The Church has a lot of interest to offer. It seems to have some good glass

The details are just wonderful, Cherie. The stained glass and the tiles on the floor. It looks like they took out some of the benches to created distance?

    • CherryPie says:

I am not sure if any benches have been removed. If I showed the view from the other side of the benches photographs of the missing congregation are pinned to the seats, perhaps where they used to sit before lockdown !.

I hope church congregations can gather together again soon.

  4. Oddly, this church reminded me of Malmesbury Abbey?!?
    Don’t know why…

    • CherryPie says:

For me it didn’t have the same reminiscence of Malmesbury Abbey.

That maybe because I had an interactive experience of Malmesbury Abbey that spanned from my visit to the Abbey and a chance encounter back in the hotel.

  5. The sign on the Calveley Tomb is very helpful, especially for visitors who value historical information.
