The Abbey Mill

Fed by the Mill Avon leat, there have been mills on this site for over a thousand years. In monastic times it was the principal mill for Tewkesbury Abbey, hence its name. The downstream part of the building, which housed the milling machinery and waterwheels, was rebuilt in 1793. The upstream, enlarged in the mid 19th century, was for the reception of grain and housed the hoist. The mill was in use until c1921, when it became a restaurant. It was converted to residential use in 2005.*

Your visit to Tewkesbury has inspired me to visit. I can actually get a through train from Bradford-on-Avon, near where I live. Thank you, Cherie

It is well worth a visit. There are some lovely buildings and some good walking trail leaflets to point out various historical features.

I am thinking of getting a rail card that can get me a third off ticket prices. Then I can venture further afield than I am happy with driving on my own.

  2. How could I even miss this mill in Tewkesbury?
I did walk along the river but I don’t remember seeing anything like this.

This building is right next to the Victoria Pleasure Gardens. You can see the building from the gardens but it doesn’t look like a mill from that perspective.

It is not on the main river, the monks built a spur off the river to service the mill.

This is a link to a walk along the river to the mill. This mill appears at 19.41 minutes in:

It would be lovely if the other mill on this walk was saved and restored.

that looks like a substantial building, as you mentioned, to house everything there. it is indeed impressive that this simple principle of operation has been in use for over one thousand years. i enjoyed this post, CP.

A rail card is a must, Cherie. I use one all the time, as like you, I don’t always like to drive too far
