Clifford’s Tower looks rather scary from below, even though the views from on top are amazing. So I was very reluctant to get close to where Jewish citizens were trapped there by potential killers. Mind you, I do not think I would voluntarily commit suicide, rather than convert.

I don’t find the castle keep particularly scary but we have so many castles in the UK. Many that still have walls and other structures in context to give them context. Many have gruesome tales to tell.

  2. Did you go inside? I don’t think you could go inside when I last visited (although it was a few years ago now), but I’ve seen it on the TV a while back.

I have been inside several times. I was keen to go inside this time as they have made the different floors more accessible by fitting out stairs and floors inside the keep. Previously you had to climb the original castle stairs and walk around the tower with low walls to the side which was a little bit uncomfortable if you are not OK with heights

The work they have done opens up the keep to be viewed more completely and the views of York off the top are stunning.

Both these stories have appalled me ever since I learned of them, Cherie

  4. It looks lovely floodlit. I have seen it from the outside – we parked by there but we didn’t have time to go inside.
