Queen Catherine’s coat of arms, incorporates the three lions of England and the fleurs-de-lys of France, it is lozenge shaped rather than shield-shaped. This signifies that she was a widow.

This central courtyard dates from the 1280s:
As early as the 14th century, cisterns were installed beneath it, to which water was supplied for the castle from springs in the park.  The yard was totally refurbished in the 1920s by Lady Baillie’s designer Rateau. *

A lone pigeon standing on the Barbican at Leeds Castle. The Barbican was built in the 1280s and served as an initial line of defence for the bridge crossing the moat to the gatehouse.
