The Chapter House is tucked away, hiding behind it’s vestibule and on first view it is both a surprise and delight. The octagonal room was completed in 1286 and is unusual in that it does not have a central column to support the vaulted roof.

The painted ceiling in the Chapter House of York Minster is made up of triangles. The ceiling was restored in 1845 with ‘Agnus Dei’ central boss.

This building is called ‘The Poem’ and it was built as a mausoleum by Henry Davis Ponchin, the founder of the gardens. It is the final resting place for Henry and his family, although it is not known why it is called ‘The Poem’.
